Planning for Surgery – What Your Oral Surgeon Recommends

If you are scheduled for oral surgery, it’s perfectly normal to feel worried and anxious. The best way to make sure everything goes smoothly is to plan ahead. Ask about your sedation and anesthesia options, and find out if your oral surgeon offers distraction methods such as television or music to help you relax during the procedure. If you will need to take prescription medications at home, arrange to have them picked up by a friend or family member immediately after your surgery.

Make Plans for Transportation

If you are having general anesthesia, you will not be able to drive after your procedure. Ask a friend or family member to drive you to the clinic on your surgery date. The designated driver will need to stay throughout the procedure, and see that you get home safely. If you have small children at home, you may need assistance during your recovery period.

Before and After Oral Surgery

You should not smoke for 12 hours before the surgery and at least 24 hours after its completion. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and don’t wear jewelry or contact lenses.

Post-Surgery Diet

Dental surgeons recommend eating a soft food diet after surgery. If you find it difficult to get the nutrition you need, consider using meal replacement options like Ensure or Boost. Plan to take it easy for a few hours or days as you recover.
