History of the Friendly City
Initially, the city was named Bradentown, and it was incorporated in 1903. The current name of Bradenton was established in 1943 when two local cities merged. Bradenton was named for Dr. Joseph Braden, who built a home that served as a refuge for settlers needing protection from Seminole attacks.
