Taking Care Of Your Smile in Florida

Your smile can be one of your greatest assets, so protecting your smile and maintaining good oral health is one of the best ways to improve your life. A great smile improves your self-confidence and self-esteem and can help you make friends more easily. At Advanced Dental Care of Florida, we want you to have the best smile possible, so call us with questions or to schedule an appointment to get tips on caring for your smile.

Improve Your Life

Smiling is one of the body's self-defense mechanisms. When you smile, your body releases “feel-good” hormones called endorphins that increase feelings of happiness and well-being. Smiling can improve your outlook, reduce anxiety, and improve even the worst day, so keep your smile beautiful by calling our Florida office.

Improve Your Immunity

Research has proven that when you smile, your body increases production of white blood cells, which are an integral component of your healthy immune system. White blood cells help fight diseases and infections, help you feel more energetic, and reduce the risk of illness

Keep Your Smile Healthy

Maintaining a healthy smile is easier than you think and probably includes some of your current routines. For the best and healthiest smile, consider the following habits:

  1. Brush at least twice daily. When you brush your teeth, you eliminate the food particles and bacteria that have lodged between your teeth, which can start the process of gum disease and decay. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and good-quality toothpaste and brush each quadrant for at least 30 seconds. A quadrant is one-fourth of your mouth: The upper right outside, the upper left outside, the lower right inside, and the lower left inside. Your brushing routine should take at least two minutes.
  2. Be sure to floss at least once daily, either before or after you brush doesn't matter as long as you floss. Ideally, you should brush and floss after each meal or snack, but this isn't always feasible. Be sure to floss just before bedtime, and don't eat anything afterward. Otherwise, food particles and bacteria will remain in your mouth overnight and begin to attack your tooth enamel, which will start the formation of decay and gum disease.

The type of floss you use doesn't matter; it's a personal preference. Traditional dental floss, a floss pick, waxed, unwaxed, or a flosser are all equally effective as long as you use them.
  3. Use an antibacterial mouthwash at least daily. Using it before bedtime can eliminate any residual bacteria that may lurk on your tongue after brushing and flossing. Whether you prefer non-alcoholic, traditional mouthwash, or fluoridated doesn't matter, but be sure to use it at least once daily.

Make sure all your dental products carry the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, so you know you're using a quality product. There are pros and cons to fluoride, so ask your dentist and your doctor about using it, and do your own research.
  4. Eat a healthy diet that's low in sugar but with good nutritional content. Examples include fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
  5. Avoid sugary and acidic drinks that can erode your tooth enamel and promote decay.
  6. Stop smoking or using tobacco products. Using tobacco products in any form can cause a variety of cancers, tooth discoloration, gum disease, and halitosis.
  7. Get regular dental checkups and teeth cleanings. Ideally, you should schedule your dental visits twice annually, but if that's not feasible, then schedule an exam and cleaning at least annually. Your dentist can spot anomalies that you might have missed even with a good oral hygiene regimen, so don't neglect your dental checkup and teeth cleaning. They can also provide tips on better hygiene and preventative care.

If you haven't had an exam and cleaning lately or if you're due for yours, call our Florida office to schedule them.

Keep Your Self-Confidence

When you have a beautiful, healthy smile, you're more inclined to smile, so your body's immune system gets a boost, and your brain releases more endorphins. It's a win-win situation that you can achieve with good oral hygiene. Eating a healthy diet will maintain better physical health, and research has established a correlation between good oral health and good physical health.

Keep Your Smile Beautiful

When you take care of your smile with good oral health habits, good dietary habits, and regularly scheduled dental visits, you're doing the most you can to maintain a healthy body and mouth. You'll reduce your stress, improve your immune system, have a more positive outlook on life, and increase your self-confidence.
