Understanding Wisdom Tooth Symptoms

Impacted Wisdom Teeth - Is It Time to Say Goodbye to Your Third Molars?

September 28, 2014 By Advanced Dental Care of Florida

Understanding Wisdom Tooth Symptoms

Wisdom teeth are located in the back of your mouth. Most people have two wisdom teeth on the top and two on the bottom. They are the last permanent teeth to erupt, and they usually show up between 17 and 22 years of age. When they grow in at an angle, they may become impacted or trapped inside the jaw beneath bone and gum tissue. In some cases, impacted teeth don’t seem to cause any symptoms, but they may still be more vulnerable to decay than other teeth. When they do cause symptoms, wisdom teeth removal is required. Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure that removes the impacted tooth from inside the jaw. 5 Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth If wisdom teeth don’t grow in properly, they often cause noticeable symptoms. Although people with impacted teeth don’t always have symptoms, some dentists suggest that wisdom teeth removal is still indicated in order to prevent future problems. If your impacted wisdom tooth becomes infected or starts to affect your other teeth, you may experience one or more of the following five symptoms:
  1. Soreness around the affected tooth or mouth pain
  2. Gum bleeding, inflammation, or tenderness
  3. Unexplained jaw swelling
  4. Unexplained headache
  5. Bad breath or unpleasant taste in the mouth
For the best results, problems with wisdom teeth should be addressed before the age of 30. It is usually easier to do a wisdom tooth removal in younger patients since their bones are more flexible and their nerve tissues are more resilient. Be sure to keep your regularly scheduled dental cleaning appointments and exams with your dentist in Florida. Routine dental x-rays can detect problems early, so your dentist can perform a wisdom tooth removal before painful symptoms or serious complications develop. Be sure to see your dentist immediately if you experience unusual symptoms such as pain or swelling.
