What Are Dentures? Are They Right for Me?

Let Your New Denture Routine Lead to a Healthier Life

What Are Dentures? Are They Right for Me?

Tooth loss doesn’t have to rob you of your self-confidence and ability to eat the foods you love. Custom affordable quality dentures made from plastic or acrylic are designed to replace some or all of your missing teeth and the lost gum tissues around them. Natural-looking complete permanent dentures serve as replacements for all your upper or lower teeth. Partial dentures are created when you still have natural teeth intact and are just missing a few. Conventional dentures are worn several weeks after any required tooth extractions are performed and gums have healed. Immediate dentures can be worn on the same day as the extractions. Do I Need Dentures? People of all ages can suffer partial or extensive tooth loss, so dentures aren’t just for older people. Replacing missing teeth is important for maintaining bone structure and preserving remaining teeth as well as speaking and chewing properly. The emotional and social impact of tooth loss can be devastating, but your dentist can help you deal with anxiety, and determine the best dentures to restore your smile. How Long Does it Take for the Denture Process? It generally takes five appointments (about a month) to complete the process. After an initial evaluation, a wax bite and impression are created to match the dimensions in your mouth. The final denture is placed after it is tested and adjusted for shape, fit, and color. It may take several weeks to get accustomed to wearing dentures. Your dentist can give you tips to help ease the transition. What Do I Need to Do to Take Care of My Dentures? 1. Remove and brush your dentures daily. 2. When not wearing your dentures, soak them in denture cleanser or water. 3. Never use hot or boiling water to sterilize your dentures. 4. Use denture adhesives as directed to improve stability. 5. Remove your dentures at night. What Are the Alternatives to Dentures? Affordable quality dentures are an option for virtually anyone, but if you prefer an alternative, ask your dentist about implants; these are titanium devices that hold a single artificial tooth in place, or serve as anchors for permanent implant dentures or bridges.
