A Kid’s Guide to a Dental Friendly Diet
When you are healthy, it means that you are growing the way you should. Good health also means that you should have enough energy to run and play outside, which helps give you the regular exercise you need. The foods you eat have a big role in your overall health. Good nutrition involves eating foods with the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. Just because foods are healthy does not mean that they can’t taste good. Lots of nutritious foods you might eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are tasty and enjoyable.
While you might think that heart health is just important for adults, this is not true. Kids need to follow a healthy diet to keep their hearts healthy, too. If you eat an unhealthy diet as a kid, you might be more likely to grow up to have serious heart problems. A healthy diet involves eating the amount of calories you need without eating too much. Overeating could lead to your body accumulating too much fat, which is not healthy for your heart. Carrying too much weight makes your heart have to work harder. A good diet includes lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins such as fish and poultry. It’s also important to stay away from too much sugar because this can cause you to gain weight.
The foods you eat also help keep your bones and teeth healthy. Eating foods with lots of calcium, protein, and vitamins helps make your bones and teeth strong. Foods with calcium are often foods that kids like, such as yogurt, cheese, and milk. Eating leafy vegetables is another way to get calcium for your teeth and bones. Try eating salads with greens such as kale and spinach.
Your immune system is in charge of defending you against germs and sicknesses. Germs can enter your body in lots of different ways. Touching a surface such as a door knob or a light switch and then rubbing your eyes or putting your fingers in your mouth is a common way for people to get sick. Being around someone else who has a cold is another way that germs pass from person to person. Once a germ gets into your body, your immune system needs to fight it off to try to stop it from making you sick. Some foods with lots of vitamins and minerals can help you build your immune system so it works better. Fruits and vegetables are usually the best immune system boosters. Berries and dark vegetables are good sources of immune-boosting vitamins. It’s also helpful to stay away from sugary foods because these kinds of foods can actually hurt your immune system and make it weaker.
Your brain needs nutrients to keep it sharp, too. When you go to school all day to learn, you can help your brain work more effectively by eating a healthy diet. Leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale have folate, which helps your brain. Eating eggs for breakfast might help you remember more things at school during your classes because eggs contain choline. Snacking on nuts might also help your memory. When it’s time for lunch, make sure your sandwich is made out of whole wheat bread because the whole grains have fiber and folate, which helps with your memory. A salmon salad sandwich with a few chopped vegetables added to the mixture could be a great way to get through the rest of the school day with lots of brain power.
