We recommend brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste after every meal and snack, and flossing daily. Your dentist can recommend products, such as floss threader and proxabrushes, to make it easier to clean between your teeth and the various bits of hardware.

You should clean your retainer every time you brush your teeth, using a soft-bristled brush without toothpaste. You should also disinfect the retainer once a week by soaking it in an over-the-counter denture cleaner.

Do I Have to Avoid Certain Foods or Activities During Orthodontic Treatment?

While you can safely eat most foods during orthodontic treatment, you should avoid foods that can damage or loosen the hardware or get stuck between the brackets and wires, such as:
